Kinerma – Coaraze
After I had undertaken many journeys to Karelia in the Russian Federation and to Provence in France, I found an interesting style for looking for and comparing similarities in the structure of rural villages, as well as the surroundings. I also aspired to visually interesting images.
I set up pairs of photos, in which the first photo was from the village Kinerma in Karelia and the second was from the village Coaraze in Provence. Photographing was like an expedition towards the similarities of buildings, structures, materials and details, even though the materials are so different - wood in Karelia and stone in Provence. Even the principle of the country house is the same in both: almost all functions under one roof!
There are many common aspects with regard to the aims and the preservation of the cultural heritage of both villages, as well as the development of tourism. The intention is to continue to develop them as vibrant villages, with respect for what is original and authentic, whilst avoiding turning them into soulless museums or theme parks. This is achieved by e.g. restoring, renovating and new building that complements the old.
Perhaps it was a lucky coincidence for me, as the 'mining village' Kinerma was included on the list of the most beautiful villages in Russia and the 'sunny village' Coaraze on the list of the most beautiful villages in France!
